Have you ever wanted to buy something but been COMPLETELY REPELLED by the sales process? I actually LIKE to be sold to. But man, it HURTS when the person is terrible at sales. Let me tell you about a painful experience I just had… I’ve been actively looking for a new video editor and got a DM from a guy whose work looked pretty good. He seemed young, but I figured I’d see if we could work something out. So I showed up to the call READY TO BUY and hopefully solve my problem. He weakly frames the call and tells me he’s going to ask some questions. “Okay…” I say, allowing him to hold the frame. Then something bizarre happened… He looks DOWN AND TO THE RIGHT. Like WAAAAY down and away from me and READS his first question WORD FOR WORD off a script. Immediately I’m put off… but I play ball and answer anyway. I give a detailed answer with several opportunities for him to probe deeper. His response? He barely acknowledges what I said and looks down and to the right AGAIN, even further away this time. (I’m wondering if his script is actually on the floor and not even on his desk!) Again… he reads the next question word for word. That’s when I broke his frame and said, “Come on man… you can ask your questions without reading off the script, can’t you?” He tried to recover with some “just seeing if I can help” line, but it was too late. I was already gone.Two questions in, less than 5 minutes into the call, he’d completely lost me. Why do I bring this up? You NEVER get a second chance to make a first impression. Once you’ve left your mark… you’ll be viewed through that lens until you MASSIVELY revamp your image. Can you recover? Maybe… but it won’t happen in one call. Probably not even two. If prospects are telling you they “need to think about it” or scheduling follow-ups only to ghost you… It’s probably because you made a BAD FIRST IMPRESSION. It could be: The result?
